METAPHYSICAL POETRY - REFLECTIVE BLOG

Hello Readers,
Welcome to My Blog, here I am going to discuss about Metaphysical Poetry, it's charecteriatics and major poets of Metaphysical Poetry.

1). CHARECTERISTICS OF METAPHYSICAL POETRY WITH EXPLANATION OF A FEW METAPHYSICAL POETRY WRITTEN BY JOHN DONNE AS WELL AS ANY OTHER METAPHYSICAL POET.
➡  In the first half of the 17th century, a group of poets emerged whose poetry Is known as the Metaphysical poetry since JOHN DONNE was the pioneer of these group, It is also known as the "SCHOOL OF DONNE" GEORGE HERBERT, RICHARD CRASHAW, ABRAHAM COWLEY, ANDREW MARWELL AND ROBERT SOUTHWELL, this poets tried to followed the style of writing poetry which was initially cultivated by JOHN DONNE. It was SAMUEL JOHNSON who first used the word Metaphysical for the poetry of John Donne and his school. When SAMUEL JOHNSON used the word "METAPHYSICAL", it was in a negative sense. He said that, "their poetry stood trial of their finger but not of their ear"(they remained successful in displaying their scholarship but they failed in giving rhythm and music to their poetry). With the passing of Tim the Sam term became a term of appraisal. Today their poetry is praised as the Metaphysical poetry.
♣ CHARECTERISTICS OF METAPHYSICAL POETRY :
🔷 FAR - FATCHED IMAGES:
Far - Fatched images is one of the most important features of Metaphysical Poetry. They never tried to use and express their images from those fields which have nothing to do with the theme of their poems, so the are called far - Fatched images. The best examples are, The Church Porch, The Pully.
🔷PLATONIC LOVE :
Platonic love is another feature of Metaphysical Poetry, it means spiritual love, which is free from elements of physical love. DEATH BE NOT PROUD,  THE SUN RISING are best examples of Platonic Love.

🔷LITERARY DEVICES :
Metaphysical poets uses metaphors, puns, paradoxes and meteres to create drama and tension. They also uses scientific, medical and phrases to create arguments about the philosophical aspects of life or to express love and tension. For example,
Donne used Flea as the symbol of love in his poem THE FLEA.

🔷UNIQUENESS :
Metaphysical Poets were men of high intellect. They were all graduated from OXFORD O CAMBRIDGE UNIVERSITY. With the help of their vast knowledge, they presented new ideas and stories to their readers.
🔷JOHN DONNE :
John Donne was an English poet and clerk in the Church of England. He is considered the prominent representative of THE METAPHYSICAL POETS. He is famous for strong, religious poems, Latin translations, Epigrams, Elegies, Songs, Satires and Sermones.

🔷POEMS OF JOHN DONNE :

🍀THE FLEA (BIOLOGICAL IMAGE)
The Flea is a remarkable example of John Donne's Metaphysical Poetry. In this poem Donne ha taken help of a Biological image Of a FLEA to deal with the theme of love. It is though the image of the Flea - an insect that the lover in the poem expressed his love for his beloved and tries to convince her not to refuse his love for her.

🍀THE ECSTACY (ABSTARCT IMAGE)
The Ecstacy, it is a poem about abstract experience about oneness in sublime love. The poet explains about the significance of both body and soul in love. It is a poem about spiritual discreption in love.

🍀THE SUN RISING (IMAGES FROME ASTRONOMY, ART AND CHEMISTRY) :
In this poem Donne has made remarkable use of far - fatched images. Here he uses sun from the field of Astronomy for the theme of love, he also uses one more image which belongs to the field of Chamestry - "Alchamie" for the expression on love. The lover says that wealth is nothing compared to love. He considers wealth nothing but a chemical - a coin made of some liquid metal.  He also use one more far - fatched image "mimic". It is an image belonging to the field of preforming art to expresse the love.

2). WRITE CRITICAL ANALYSIS OF METAPHYSICAL POEMS OF OTHER THAN JOHN DONNE.

George Herbert was a Welsh born poet, orator an priest of the CHURCH OF ENGLAND. Hi poetry is associated with the writings of the Metaphysical Poets and he is recognised as one of the "foremost British devotional lyricists".let's discuss about his famouse poem The Pully in detail.

🍀THE PULLY :

The Pulley

When God at first made man,
Having a glass of blessings standing by,
“Let us,” said he, “pour on him all we can.
Let the world’s riches, which dispersèd lie,
Contract into a span.”

So strength first made a way;
Then beauty flowed, then wisdom, honour, pleasure.
When almost all was out, God made a stay,
Perceiving that, alone of all his treasure,
Rest in the bottom lay.

“For if I should,” said he,
“Bestow this jewel also on my creature,
He would adore my gifts instead of me,
And rest in Nature, not the God of Nature;
So both should losers be.

“Yet let him keep the rest,
But keep them with repining restlessness;
Let him be rich and weary, that at least,
If goodness lead him not, yet weariness
May toss him to my breast.”

🍀ANALYSIS OF THE POEM,, "THE PULLY" :
TH PULLY, is a religious, metaphysical poem which centers on the "PULLY" as a prime conceit in the poem. Herbert wants to unveil the truth that why human beings are so restless and unsatisfying despite of having all the things he wants. After God made his universe, he gathered all the blessings of the world in a glass and distributed them to the human beings one after another. First he gave the strength, therefore human became strong enough to survive. One by one, God gave them beauty, wisdom, honor, pleasure and many other blessings. When almost all was gone, God kep "rest" at the bottom of the glass, thinking that if the rest is given they may forget him, he will lose the love and affection of human beings. God wanted man to discover the "rest" only in him, he alone can truly give the mankind the rest they frantically seek. The poet used Pully as the symbol to discribe God and manking.

HAMLET - THINKING ACTIVITY - 4

Hello Readers,
Welcome to My Blog, here I'm going to discuss about the questions related to the movie "HAMLET" directed by KENNETH BRANAGH

KENNETH BRANAGH

Branagh's interview on Hamlet

SIR KENNATH CHARLES BRANAGH is a Northern Irish Actor, Director, Producer and Screenwriter. BRANAGH trained at THE ROYAL ACADEMY OF DRAMATIC ART in LONDON. He is best known for his film adaptations of "SHAKESPERIAN" plays. After a brief introduction of KEENTH BRENAGH let's discuss about the questions related to the movie "HAMLET".

Trailer of the movie Hamlet by Keeath Branagh

1). HOW FAITHFUL IS THE MOVIE TO THE ORIGINAL PLAY?

The movie is very faithful to the play, though BRENAGH made some changes in it but the changes made the movie more beautiful and a masterpiece.

2).AFTER WATCHING THE MOVIE, HAVE YOUR PERCEPTION ABOUT THE PLAY, CHARECTERS OR SITUATIONS CHANGED?

➡ Yes, after watching the movie my perception about the play, characters and situations changed, when I read the play I was not convinced about Hamlet's delay in taking revenge but after watching the movie I got the complete and perfect understanding of Hamlet's delay.

3).DO YOU FEEL 'AESTHETIC DELIGHT' WHILE WATCHING THE MOVIE? IF YES, EXACTLY WHEN DID IT HAPPEN?

Scene - 3 act - 3

Yes, I did feel 'AESTHETIC DELIGHT' while watching the movie in "PRAYING SCENE" because from the begging of the play we have only seen Hamlet's grief and confusion but for the first time we have seen the true color of Claudius, he himself confesses his crime.

4) DO YOU FEEL "CATHARSIS "WHILE OR AFTER WATCHING THE MOVIE? IF YES, EXACTLY WHEN DID IT HAPPEN? IF NO, CAN YOU EXPLAIN WITH REASONS?

LAST SCENE

Yes, I did feel" CATHARSIS " during the last scene, after so much over thinking, pretending of madness and suffering HAMLET becomes free from all the miseries and finds peace and dies a tragic but peaceful death.

6).  DOES SCREENING OF THE MOVIE HELP YOU IN BETTER UNDERSTANDING OF THE PLAY?

➡ yes, the screening of the movie helped me in better understanding of the play.

7). WAS THERE ANY PARTICULAR SCENE OR MOMENT IN THE MOVIE THAT YOU WILL CHERISH LIFETIME?

Kate Winslet as OPHELIA

➡ All the scenes of the movie were masterpiece but the madness of OPHELIA played by KATE WINSLET is my most favorite scene from the Movie, so realistic, it makes us believe that she is not Kate Winslet but OPHELIA herself. This scene is stuck in my mind and I will always cherish it lifetime.

7) IF YOU ARE DIRECTOR, WHAT CHANGES WOULD YOU LIKE TO MAKE IN THE REMAKING OF THE MOVIE ON SHAKESPEARE'S HAMLET?

➡ If I would be remaking the movie HAMLET I would show more of Hamlet and Ophelia's relationship and also choose to describe Claudius more cruel who  forcefully marries Gertrude and also will choose modern setting for the movie (maybe LONDON).

8). IN THE BEGGING OF THE MOVIE, CAMREA ROLLS OVER THE SATATU OF THE KING HAMLET OUT SIDE THE ELSINOR CASTLE. THE MOVIE ENDS WITH THE SIMILAR SEQUENCE WHEREIN THE STATUE OF THE KING HAMLET IS HAMMERED DOWN TO THE DUST. WHAT SORT OF SYMBOLISM DO YOU READ IN THIS? ( clue : in book IX of 'PARADISE LOST', Satan reflects on hi revenge, descend to? Who aspires must down as low,

As high he soared, obnoxious, first or last, to basest things, Revenge, at first thought sweet, bitter or long back on itself recoils. "I I no King Hamlet's ambition to avenge his death responsible for the downfall of his kingdom which I symbolically pictured in last scenes?)

The hammering down of kings statue symbolizes many things, such as

The hammering down of King's Statue symbolizes that  the king's soul is rested in peace because the revenge is taken by Hamlet as he wanted,

It also symbolizes the downfall of Denmark as no one Is left to rule the kingdom.

Yes it is KING HAMLET'S ambition to avenge his death responsible for the downfall of his kingdom, which is symbolically pictured in the Last scene.

9). WHILE STUDYING THE PLAY THROUGH MOVIE, WHICH APPROACH DO YOU FIND MORE APPLICABLE TO THE PLAY? GIVE REASONS WITH ILLUSTRATIONS.

➡  While studying the play through movie PSYCHOLOGICAL APPROACH is more applicable to the play,

KEY CONCEPT OF THE PSYCHOLOGICAL APPROACH :

ABUSE,
MISUNDERSTANDINGS.

MAIN CRITICS OF THE PSYCHOLOGICAL APPROACH :

SIGMUND FRUIED,
ARISTOTLE,
NORMAN. N. HOLLAND

ILLUSTRATIONS FROM HAMLET :

OEDIPUS COMPLEX AND MACBETHIAN DESIRE IN HAMLET :

Because of his father's death and his mother's over hasty marriage with his uncle Claudius, Hamlets says this lines to his friend Horatio during act - 5 of the scene - 2, we can see Oedipus complex and Macbethian desire in Hamlet's words.

MISOGYNY IN HAMLET :

Hamlet mourners the death of his father and changing nature of women, referring to his mother, Gertrude as she has married his uncle Claudius. To Hamlet's mind women represents frailty, they are breakable, weak and delicate in nature.

Nunnery is a place for pure women who give themselves body and soles to God, a nunnery also means a whore house. Nunnery has a double meaning. Essentially, Hamlet I telling Ophelia that she is both pure and impure. Nunnery was usually another term for a Covent for nuns but was sometimes an Elizabethan euphemism for a brothel.

10). WHICH OF THE ABOVE MENTIONED APPROACHES (IN PRE - VIEWING TASK) APPEALS YOU MORE THAN OTHER? WHY? GIVE REASONS.

PSYCHOLOGICAL APPROACH appealed me most more than other approaches because it was Hamlet's over thinking which is responsible for his doom, he was a very sensitive noble man, the ghost of his father told him that Claudius killed him but Hamlet wasted his time on investigating about It and in the end he dies with his mother, Laertes, Claudius. He I also responsible for the death of Polonius and madness and death of His lady love Ophelia.

                                                                                                               THANK YOU...

THINKING ACTIVITY - 3

Hello Readers ,

welcome to my blog. I am composing this blog on the grounds of a task assigned to me by my Professor ,to know more about the task CLICK HERE .today's blog is about a famous play Dr. Faustus written by Christopher Marlowe. whenever men tried to go against the will of God he was left with nothing but miseries. Dr. Faustus a scholar who masters all the arts of the world including Geography, Science, Philosophy , Medicine and practices  necromancy and sold his soul to Lucifer, the fallen angel and lost his life in order to become a demi God.

1) THE PLAY DIRECTED BY MATTHEW DUNSTER FOR GLOBE THEATER ENDS WITH THIS SCENE ( SEE THE IMAGE OF LUCIFER) WHAT DOES IT SIGNIFY?

The Glob Theater

GLOBE THERATER, LONDON

The GLOBE THEATER was a theater in LONDON associated with WILLIAM SHAKESPEARE. It was built in 1599 by SHAKESPEARE'S PLAYING COMPANY. the LORD CHAMBERLAINS MAN. on land owned by THOMAS BREND and inherited by his son NICHOLAS BREND and grandson SIR MATTHEW BRAND, and was destroyed by fire on 29th JUNE 1613. A SECOND GLOBE THEATER was built on the same site by JUNE 1614 an closed by an ORDINANCE issued on 6 SEPTEMBER 1642. A modern reconstruction of the GLOBE, named SHAKESPEARE'S GLOBE opened in 1997 approximately 750 feet from the site of the original theater.

LUCIFER WITH WIDE WINGS

FAUSTUS German scholar practices NECROMANCY to  BECOME DEMI - GOD with the help of the his two friends VALDES and CORNELIUS. HE SELLS his SOUL to LUCIFER THE PRINCE OF HELL, in exchange of FOUR TWENTY years service from MEPHISTOPHELES. GOOD ANGEL, OLD MAN AND EVEN MEPHISTOPHELES tries to worn him as this path will lead him to his doom but he ignores everything and signs the contract with his own blood. After gaining power FAUSTUS becomes more arrogant and wastes his life in doing foolish things such as harresing POPE, THE HORSE Courserer, CALLING HELEN OF TROY TO impress the scholars and at the end of the play he comes to his senses and begs for forgiveness and repent but the evil wins and LUCIFER takes away his soul, above picture from MATTHEW DUNSTER'S PLAY signifies the message of the wining of evil, if you do bad you'll definitely burn in hell.

2) IS GOD PRESENT IN THE PLAY? IF YES, WHERE AND HOW? IF NO WHY?

YES, the God was percent in the Last scene of the play though MARLOWE himself didn't specify him as God he introduced him to us as OLD MAN. In the last scene he represents him as an enigmatic figure. The old man urges FAUSTUS to repent and to ask God for mercy. He seems to replace good and evil angels, who in the first scene tries to influence FAUSTUS'S behavior.

The OLD MAN says to Faustus :

'O Gentle Faustus ,leave this  damned art, this magic that will charm  thy soul to hell and quit bereave thee to of salvation.Though thou has now offended like a man, do not preserve in it like a Devil, yet,ye thou hast an amiable soul if sin by custom grew not into nature then, Faustus , will repentance come too late! then, thou art banished from the sight of heaven! no mortal can can express the pains of hell! ...for gentle son , i speak of not in wrath or envy of thee but in tender love...and so have hope that this my kind rebuke, checking thy body, may amend thy soul.
3) WHAT READING AND INTERPRETATION CAN BE GIVEN TO THIS IMAGE (SEE THE IMAGE IN OF DAEDALUS AND ICARUS) WITH REFERENCE TO THE CENTRAL THEME OF THE PLAY DOCTOR FAUSTUS?

The Myth Of Daedalus and Icarus

Watch This Short Video

In GREEK mythology, DAEDALUS was a skillful craftsman and artist and was seen as a symbol of wisdom, knowledge and power. He is the father of ICARUS. He invented and built the labyrinth for KING MINOS of CRETE but shortly after finishing KING MINOS had DAEDALUS imprisoned within the labyrinth. He and ICARUS devised a plan to escape by using wings made of wax that DAEDALUS had invented. They escaped, but sadly ICARUS did not heard his fathers warnings and flew too close to the sun. The wax melted and ICARUS fell to his death. This left DAEDALUS heartbroken, but instead of giving up he flew to the island of SICILY.

The central theme of DOCTOR FAUSTUS is the POWER AS A CORRUPTING INFLUENCE, we have seen that FAUSTUS soled his soul to LUCIFER to be a DEMI - GOD but when he gains the powers he forgets his aim for which he soled his soul and he wastes his FOUR TWENTY YEARS time in harassing  POPE, TRICKING HORSE COURSERER, and calling HELEN OF TROY just to impress his scholar friends and at the end he repents and begs for mercy but Lucifer captures  his soul and he dies. Likewise ICARUS also didn't listened his father and fly high  near to the sun  and because of the melting of wax dies.

4) HOW DO YOU INTERPRET THIS IMAGE?

This painting is made by DUTCH artist PIETER BRUEGEL THE ELDER, the name of this painting is LANDSCAPE WITH THE FALL OF ICARUS, in the above  painting we can see that one person ICARUS is falling from the sky into the sea but no one noticed it, the farmer is busy in his field, the shepherd is busy with his sheep even we can see a man near the bank of the sea but no one noticed about the death of  ICARUS. The  picture Point out the ignorance of people towards  fellow men's sufferings.

5) READ THIS ARTICLE BY BHAGAT SINGH. IN LIGHT OF THE ARGUMENTS MADE BY BHAGAT SINGH IN THIS ARTICLE, CAN YOU RE WRITE LAST MONOLOGUE OF DOCTOR FAUSTUS?

 BHAGAT SINGH :
DON'T WORRY I'M NOT AFRAID OF ANYTHING,
O MEPHISTOPHELES, THE SERVANT TO THE PRINCE OF HELL,
O SWEET MEPHISTOPHELES! COME FAST AND TAKE ME TO THEE,
DON'T WORRY, YOU DO YOUR DUTY, COME AND TAKE MY SOUL,
I AM ALLOWING YOU TO CUTE MY HEAD, I'M ALLOWING YOU TO BURN MY SOUL IN THE FIRE OF HELL,
I DON'T HAVE ANY REGRETS IN LIFE, I LIVED MY LIFE TO THE FULLEST,
SOME USED CALL ME DICTATOR and Bossy.
FOR SUCH PETTY AND SELFISH MOTIVES I SHALL NOT PRAY
(THUNDER, ENTERS DEVIL)
AT LAST YOU CAME SWEET MEPHISTOPHELES! COME,COME AND TAKE ME TO THE HELL. LIVE LONG FREEDOM
(EXEUNT DEVILS WITH BHAGAT SINGH

6)SUMMARIZE  ARTICLES DISCUSSED IN THE CLASS.

(A) MYTH, MYTHOLOGY AND MARLOWE'S DOCTOR FAUSTUS by KENNETH L. Golden, we can compare DOCTOR FAUSTUS with DAEDALUS AND ICARUS they both becomes corrupt by the influence of power and meets pitiful death according to A. N. OKERLUND, humans always  chooses things which they wants to do the most whether the way is good or bad, FAUSTUS practices necromancy and sold his soul to Lucifer knowing it's bad, in scene one he only sees the parts about sin and death, he ignores the rest of the passage offering eternal life to those who trusts in Christ.
