GIRISH KARNARD was was an Indian actor, film director, kannada writer and a Rhodes scholar, who predominantly worked in South indian cinema and Bollywood. For four decades Karnard composed plays, often using history and mythology to tackle contemporary issues. He translated his plays into English and received acclaim. His plays have been translated into some Indian languages and also directed by directors like Ebrahim akazi, B. V. Kanath an also by Alyque Padamshee. Karnad was born in Matheran.

AT THE TATA LITERARY FESTIVAL held in Mumbi in 2012 karnard was invited to speak about his life in theater in an hour long session, instead of talking about the subject, he took the opportunity to lash out at V. S. NAIPAUL for hi "antipathy towards Indian Muslims" 

V. S. NAIPAUL had earlier been conferred the life time achievement award by the festival's organizers. Karnard also critized the organizers for having honored NAIPAUL. 

just a few weeks after this, Karnard again created controversy by claiming that Rabindranath Tagore, who wrote india's national anthem, was a great poet but a second rate playwright. In November 2015, during celebrations marking the anniversary of 18th century Muslim ruler Tipu Sultan's birth, karnard stated tha Bangalore International Airport should have been name after Tipu Sultan instead of Kampa Gowda, Karnard apologized the following day. 

 He also spoke against the government and against Gauri Lankesh's murder. He was a great man with multitasking abilities.
